NXT Floor Sweeper
PROJECT THEME: Environmental
PROJECT NAME: NXT Floor Sweeper
INTRODUCTION:
The robot is created to sweep rubbish on the floor and put it into the dustpan that placed at the bottom of the robot body. Apart from that, it also avoids obstacles in front of it by using ultrasonic sensor.
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the project work, students should be able to:
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Regarding above, our project is based on the environmental aspect. We chose environmental as a theme because it synonyms and close to the students because they live in environment as well. As a result, we have come out with the idea of making the ‘NXT Floor Sweeper’. The idea of making such robot came acrossed when we watched a demonstration of Roomba in the internet (you-tube). From that, we realized that this is an interesting robot to be share with the students. The NXT Floor Sweeper is working on the floor where it will be programmed to spin it brush on the floor and sweep the rubbish and put it into the dustpan. It will collect rubbish and escape from any obstacle in front of it by using ultrasonic sensor. Specifically, ultrasonic sensor will be used to sense the distance between obstacle and the robot itself. In the future, ‘NXT Floor Sweeper’ can be developed to be more effective toward human beings.
This robot is beneficial to us because:
Again, this week we had another workshop on robotics. As reminded by our lecturer,he wanted us to demonstrate our robot today. However, if we aren’t able to complete, we still can present it on the next day. See, how sporting our lecturer today =p..hehe…
But, that is not the main point,ok??. All of us were struggling to build the ‘NXT Floor Sweeper’. The most difficult part in building the robot is when we have to fit the brush onto the robot. For readers information, the brush is not included in the LEGO set. So, the assembling part is likely to be quite difficult for us. Our first solution is to cut down the size of the brush, but still, the brush aren’t fixed. Again, we cut down the size. It is actually hard because we have to use the pliers to cut the end of the brush because it is made from steel. *sigh

As shown by the pictures above, the brush needs to be perfectly fit with the ‘socket’ in front, because if not the brush could not spinning well. It took a bit longer time to adjust the brush because at the same time we had to adjust the gears as well. Readers, that is the second solution!!. The gears need to be adjusted. Finally, we managed to solve it and successfully presented to our lecturer on the day it self at 3pm. Thanks to my all my group members. What a relief!! =D

1st for all, i would to say sorry to each of my group members for not being attended to class last week. i know its been hard for you guys to create such a great design of our project as shown in below entry. by the way, i have to complete my other individual assignment which research method because i have to start writing all over again cause i change my topic. so i hope u guy able to forgive me. I’ll try my best to work together as a team as we gone through this semester. that all, TQ.
This entry will reveal our own project, named as stated above. However, it still not complete yet because the brush (function as sweeper) is not with us now.
THEME: Environmental
We choose this theme because it meets all the criteria as we mentioned earlier and it suits to the primary students in year 5 and 6.

This week, we had another workshop on robotics. After deciding our project theme which is cleaning, we tried ourself to build a simple robot. This robot is just a ‘base’ of the real project name…….(will tell u later, surprise!!)Coming soon, after we have enough materials for our project, we will definitely show you =p.
So….let us see our first attempt.

After having several discussion among group members, we set to have specific theme for our project which is “cleaning“. This able to help us to determine the exact project that we wanted to do. We been refering to romba product which one of the automatic vacuum cleaner. So that, we decide to create NXT robot that able to swept a floor which is more relevance towards school’s students. In the next entry, we will try to upload latest phoro of our project.
